Ariel's Back: Her Opponent Failed Racket Test

The end of the road for Ariel Hsing of the United States of America; she suffered defeat in her Preliminary Round Women’s Singles duel on Wednesday April 29, 2009 at the H.I.S. World Championships and it seemed the journey was over.

However, following the contest against Chinese Taipei’s Hsiung Nai-I, the latter’s bat failed the racket test and thus disqualification was the only option. The match was awarded to Ariel Hsing and a place in the main draw for the 13 year old was reserved.

It was a red light for Hsiung Nai-I, a green light for Ariel Hsing.

Four Americans
She is one of four Americans to be present in the first round of the Women’s Singles event; the other three being players of notably more experience: Gao Jun, Crystal Huang and Jasna Reed.

In fact, the American team represents both extremes of the age spectrum present in Yokohama.

Experienced Players
I’m told it’s very rude to divulge a lady’s age; so apologies for my bad manners.

Gao Jun and Jasna Reed are the third and fourth most senior female players on duty in Yokohama; Gao Jun was born in 1969, while Jasna Reed said hello to the world one year later.

Two More Players Older
For the record the two more senior players are Luxembourg’s Ni Xialian and Mongolia’s Ulrika Qvist. The former was born in 1963, the latter in 1967.

Rude to divulge a lady’s age; did I do that?

Round One Opponents
Both Americans are vastly experienced and two of the most charming ladies you could wish to meet; both meet players who in recent years have enjoyed successes at junior level.

Gao Jun plays Canada’s Zhang Mo while Jasna Reed confronts Romania’s Elizabeth Samara.

Defensive Adversary
Meanwhile, for Crystal Huang, she faces a tough challenge in the guise of Singapore’s Sun Bei Bei with Ariel Hsing having to show she is competent against defense.

She opposes the backspin artist, Li Jie of the Netherlands.
