In the semi-finals England’s top team of Parker/Sibley were waiting for the Canadians. Solid play from both players overcame some early match nervousness and the Canadians won the match convincingly by a score of 3-1 (11, 5-11, 12- 10, 11- 1).
A good start in the finals against Singapore’s Yu Meng Yu/Bei Bei Sun was not enough. The Singapore team showed their class and experience winning the match 3-1 (4-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-7).
“I am reasonably happy about our results here,” reflected Canadian coach Junya Chen on the results of the women’s team. “We have two players – Zhang Mo and Sara Yuen – who have shown themselves among the best players here. “Our next players to complete the team has to come from the ranks of our youngsters.”
In team competition, Canada split matches with England, losing in the preliminary round 3-2 and defeating England for 5th position by a score of 3-2. “Zhang Mo played quite well here winning all matches against the English women; she also beat the eventual women’s singles finalist Yu Meng Yu in the team match against Singapore.”
On the men’s side, Canada left without a medal. The team finished 5th, Pradeeban Peter-Paul reached the Quarter Finals and some of the younger players recorded some good wins; notable Andre Ho against Australia’s #3 TRAN Kiet Song.
Canada’s men had to compete in the team competition without two of Canada’s best players Pierre-Luc Hinse (sickness) and Shen Qiang. Hinse tried to come back in the Singles and Doubles event and recorded a good win against India’s Pathik Mehta but failed to conquer #1 seed Gao Ning of Singapore.
Homayoun Kamkar-Parsi and Xavier Therien contributed with some important wins to the team.
