Dayton Giant RR Open
By John Dichiaro
April 5, 2009 - Although construction at the Lohrey Center, limited our Annual April Tournament to eight tables, a Sunday event, and a smaller field of players, the five RR groups of eight players were quite competitive, and the play was especially enjoyable for the spectators. The top three finishers of each RR group shared the $900 in “C Notes” and other prizes. Thanks again to Butterfly for providing the tournament balls. We are all looking forward to the completion of the center’s face-lift which will give table tennis improved playing conditions in the revamped multipurpose rooms and air-conditioned gym.
In the “A” group, top seed Arjun Shankaren went undefeated at 7-0, but was tested in two five game matches with the number 3 and 4 seeds, Don Hamilton and Nick Snider. Hamilton was up 2-0 with two 11-9 game victories and at 7 all in the fifth was still in contention before fading to lose at -9,-9,6, 4, 8. Snider, in similar fashion held a 2-1 lead before going down at -7, 4,-6, 2, 7. John Tannehill, the number 2 seed was involved in a 3 way tie for second with Hamilton and Snider, all at 5-2. Deuce is the name of the game for these three with Tannehill over Hamilton,10,10,7, Hamilton over Snider 13,12,-5,8 and Snider over Tannehill -7,7,11 ,22 (yes that’s 22). Tannehill wins the tie-break for second with Snider coming in third, and Hamilton fourth.
