2009 Millcreek Giant Round Robin

Division #2 match: Bob Cox, Pittsburgh, vs Hollie Lau, Toronto
by Sam Steiner
Erie, PA - April 5, 2009 - The Erie round robin tournament continues to set new attendance records with 93 participants this year. By switching to a "two shift" operation, with ‘under 1600’ playing from 10:00am-3:00pm, and ‘over 1600’ from 3:00pm-8:00pm, we were able to accommodate more players than previously.

1st Division #7 - Chad Moore, Erie
The opening round matches were called at 10:00am, but just as play commenced, the gym lights went out and would not come back on. After frantically searching for the custodian it turned out that an area-wide power outage had occurred, a horrifying predicament for any tournament director. Calls to Penelec indicated that power would be restored by 12:30, promising a nice 2-hour wait in the dark. Fortunately power was restored after about an hour and play resumed.

3rd Division #1 - Colin Greenidge, Toronto
While the draw was a little weak at the top end, most of the groups were tightly spaced and the competitors fought and sweated their way to their final groups. Top seed Yong Ren of Buffalo survived two tight 5-game matches to take first in Div. 1, while Toronto's David Lau edged out cross-town rival Colin Greenidge for 2nd. Mike Walk of Pittsburgh had wins over David and an 11-8 in the 5th loss to Ren, but still managed to place 6th out of 6 in the Div. 1 final. Penn State's Hank McCoullum posted impressive wins over Walk and Greenidge but came up short due to early-round losses.

Division #1 Match - Tak Cheong Yip, Cleveland, vs. Hank McCoullum, Penn State
Fully half of all entrants took home a share of $2500 cash prizes or equivalent trophies. Thanks to all entrants and tournament committee members, and to butterfly for sponsorship.
