2009 Butterfly MDTTC April Open Report

(L to R) Open Runner-Up: Vahid Mosafari, Open Winner: Raghu Nadmichettu
By Alan Lang
An exciting April tournament was held this month on the 26th and 27th. Around 40 players showed up to take part in the festivities that are little less than expected. Most of the last tournament winners did not show up to defend their titles. This may due to nice April weather that people are going out for out door activities. The Open single had only 6 participants and was played out with a single round robin with top 4 people taking the price money. The other events all had at least 8 players. Despite this low turn out, many interesting matches were played. Raghu Nadmichettu (2419) swept the Open Single, with 5 Wins, zero losses, and with no match going past the fourth game. Runner-up Vahid Mosafari (2161) also put on a good show, with 4 wins and 1 loss.
Vahid later won the U2300 event, defeating Lixin Lang (2060) at semifinal and John Hsu at the final (2022), despite losing to Jeffrey Hsin (1999) in the Round Robin. Jeffrey Hsin also had a good show in this tournament by entering all events on Saturday and made to the semifinals of all the events he entered. In the U2300 event he defeated 2161 rated Vahid Mosafari only to lose to John Hus at the semifinal. In the U2150 event, his good fortune somehow ran out by losing to Gorge Nie (1763) in the group and Lixin Lang (2060) in the semifinal. Lixin beat Patrick Kin Lue Lui (1934) in the final to cinch the U2150 title. In the U2000 event held earlier that day, Jeffery emerged as the victor, beating Mohamed Komara (1919) in the semifinal, and Mark Radom (1864) in the final. That wraps up Saturday’s events.

(L to R) U2300 Winner: Vahid Mosafari, U2300 Runner-Up: John Hsu
Sunday started off with the U1100, with Misho Sakian (1080) playing a perfect event, with no losses and all 3-0 wins, only to be defeated by Derek Nie (865) 3-0 in the final. Derek Nie deserves special attention in this tournament, being only 8 years old and the youngest participant. Not only did he win the U1100, but also made it to the semifinal of the U1350 and the U1600 event. Derek’s amazing performance in the April tournament will no doubt give his rating a large and deserving boost. Following the U1100 was the U1850, won by Alan Lang (1709), beating Michael Ding (1374) in the final. Subsequently, the U1600 was won by Zhe Chen (1304), beating Hui Zhao (1195) 3-1 in the final. Hui Zhao also showed up for the U1350 earlier that day, beating Kyle Yen (1231) in the final, 3-1. That wraps up Sunday’s events, and an unforgettable April Tournament.
