The 2009 Butterfly MDTTC February Open was held at Maryland Table Tennis Center, Gaithersburg, Maryland over the weekend of February 14th and 15th. More than 60 players from Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Washington signed up for the tournament and 55 people actually participated in the two-day events. Some local top players were absent due to the injury or sickness and some players pull out at the last minute.

The top seed Michael Wang (2204) was on a business trip from Washington and ended up with winning both Open Singles and Under 2350 events.

Gabriel Skolnick (2041) from Pennsylvania signed up all four events on Saturday and played a total of 19 matches with an almost none stop action. Since Gabriel made to the play-offs in all four events, the matches were lined up for him one after the other only aloud a few minutes breaks between matches. In the U2050 event, he defeated Mark Radon (1874) in the semi-final and only lost to Lixin Lang (2040) in the 5th game in the final. He later came back to defeated Lixin Lang in the semi-final of Open Singles event and took the second place after a 1-4 loss to Michael Wang in the final.

Fourteen years old Nina Zhen (1851) performed exceptionally well in this tournament by taking 2nd place in U2350 event. She was the only female player entered the tournament on Saturday. After two losses in the Open event, she did a great job in the U2350 event by defeating every one in her group including 2112 rated Micaiah Skolnick and went all the way to the final by defeating Gabriel Skolnick (2041) in the semi-final with the only loss to the top seed Michael Wang (2204) in the final.

In the U2200 event, Hossein Sharifi (1965) took the first place by defeating Gregory Mascialino (1925) in the fifth game in the final.

More people participated in Sunday's event the next day. The U1900 event was won by Mohamed Kamara (1821), who defeated Gabriel Lu (1674) in the final. Alex Polyakov (1307) took the first place in both U1650 and U1400 events by beating David Goodwin (1389) twice. In U1150 event Ara Sahakian defeated Misho Sakian in the final 3-1. In U800 event Jack Heyman took the first and Rafael Portilla came in second.
