11 players from 4 different schools participated in the ACUI Region 4 Singles Championship held at Morgan State University on Saturday, February 20th. The presence of both players that had participated in past years as well as new competitors made for an exciting competition.
The first part of the tournament consisted of 3 round-robins and moved pretty quickly as—with the exception of one group—the top seeded players won their respective matches and there were few upsets. The top two players from each group--Phillip Golden (UMBC), Mu-Tien Chang (UMCP), Wucheng Tao (UMBC), Qiming Chen (UMCP), Nikhil Ramsubramaniam (UMBC) and Mukul Sonwalkar (GMU)--automatically qualified for the ACUI National Singles Championships to be held in Waukesha, Wisconsin April 9-11, 2010, and advanced to a 6-player round-robin, while the remaining players--Adam Williamson (PSU), Sadiq Alhasan (GMU), Yongxiang Mao (GMU) and Yong Chen (PSU)--fought for the 7th and 8th places that would qualify them for the National Championships.
In the second part of the tournament, Golden's two-winged loop style prevailed against the rest of the competitors, which allowed him to win all of his matches and obtain 1st place. 2nd place went to Chang while Ramsubramaniam came 3rd. Alhasan and Mao from George Mason University fetched 7th and 8th. Ramita Dewan (UMCP), being the only female player in the tournament, fetched 1st place but not without breaking a sweat as she did compete against her male peers in both stages of the tournament.
The official results are as follows--with the top 8 players qualifying for the National Championships:
