Two tournaments completed in China, eyes now turn towards South America with the Argentina Junior and Cadet Open due to start on Tuesday June 22, 2010, the seventeenth ITTF Junior Circuit event of the year.

The event will be staged in the country’s capital city of Buenos Aires, a city whose sporting attentions are no doubt focused heavily on events in South Africa at the Football World Cup, but at moment it is a metropolis where table tennis is thriving.

Five days of intense competition have just been completed with the Latin American Junior Championships drawing to a conclusion on Sunday June 20, 2010.

Team Success for Brazil
Brazil, the largest land mass in South America, dominated the team events.

They won three of the four titles on offer – Junior Boys’ Team, Junior Girls’ Team, and Cadet Boys’ Team – the one to elude being the Cadet Girls’ Team competition where they gained the silver medal losing in the final to Peru.

Caroline Kumahara
However, it should be noted that Caroline Kumahara, still in the cadet age group, played for the junior team, not the cadet team; with the talented right hander in action in the younger age group matters might well have been different.

Furthermore, when it came to the individual events Kumahara, who must be a strong candidate for the Pan American Team at the ITTF Cadet Challenge in India in early November, played in the junior competitions as opposed to the cadet events and she emerged successful.

Titles
She won the Junior Singles crown beating Paraguay’s Sandy Gavilan in the final; she partnered Katia Kawai to Junior Girls’ Doubles success, overcoming the Peruvian partnership of Angela Mori and Nadia Quiñonez in the final, while in the Junior Mixed Doubles competition, she clinched bronze with Eric Jouti.

The event was won by Felipe Olivares and Judith Morales of Chile who defeated Paraguay’s Marcelo Aguirre and Sandy Gavilan in the final.

Marcelo Aguirre
Silver for Marcelo Aguirre but in the Junior Boys’ Singles event and with Axel Gavilan in the Junior Boys’ Doubles, he secured gold.

He totally dominated the singles competition, surrendering only one game en route to the title, that being against Brazil’s Danilo Toma in the semi-finals; otherwise it was a series of straight game victories with Chile’s Felipe Olivares the man the suffer in the final.

Similarly, it was Felipe Olivares who was to conclude matters with a silver medal in the Boys’ Doubles event, alongside Matias Contreras the pair found the Paraguayans irrepressible.

Hugo Calderano
Meanwhile, in the cadet events, Brazil’s Hugo Calderano emerged as the most successful male player.

He beat Chile’s Sebastian Roman in the final of the Cadet Boys’ Singles competition and partnered Vitor Ishiy to Cadet Boys’ Doubles gold.

Gremlis Arvelo
Two cadet titles for Hugo Calderano and there were also two for Venezuela’s Gremlis Arvelo.

She captured gold in the Cadet Girls’ Doubles event in partnership with Winberely Montero, the duo overcame Peru’s Valentina Lertora and Francesca Vargas in the final, and partnered Frangher Coronel to the top prize in the Cadet Mixed Doubles competition.

The pair overcame Vitor Ishiy and Priscilla Salvador of Brazil in the final.

Eva Brito
However, in the Cadet Girls’ Singles event it was not to be for Gremlis Arvelo, the Dominican Republic’s Eva Brito secured the top prize accounting for Colombia’s Daniela Castillo at the final hurdle.
