Courtesy of CTTA The women's team started out against Colombia. With the retirement of Judy Long (after the Beijing Olympics) every match was going to be difficult at these World Championships. Canada's #1 had experienced 'first match jitters' and narrowly won her two matches, Sara Yuen contributed the third point for a 3-2 win. |
Disaster struck after the end of the match. On her way out of the players' box, Zhang Mo cut her hand on the barriers which would put her on the bench for all but one of the remaining group matches.
Despite some brave attempts, the team could not win another match in their group and will fight relegation in the second stage.
The Men's series started against Israel. With three retirements of top players since the last World Championships each match would be difficult.
The match against Israel would show how difficult.
Canada's #1 Pradeeban Peter-Paul, got into the match of the night. After 10 match points, Israel's #1 Isaak Abramov emerged victorious (10,-11,13,-11,-16.).
Pierre-Luc Hinse followed up with a 4 game (all overtime) loss, followed by another closely fought loss by Pierre-Luc Theriault.
This set the stage for two losses against India and Belgium, and finally a win against Bosnia-Herzegowina.
