Maryland Table Tennis Center (MDTTC) hosted its very first New York Table Tennis League (NYTTL) team matches this past Sunday on May 16, 2010 at MDTTC in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
The Host club MDTTC was represented by Raghu Nadmichettu, Xiyao (Pamela) Song and Nathan Hsu. The Guest club Dominican Association, led by Jose Hernandez, was represented by Raymundo Fermin, Kevin Puello, Levris Rodriguez, who were all former members of the Dominican Republic national team. We also welcomed NYTTL League Director Mauricio Vergara and his wife.
From the beginning when Dominican Association team arrived on Sunday afternoon, MDTTC was buzzing with excitement. For most MDTTC’s younger junior players, it was their first time watching an elite league / club-to-club competition at their club. They liked the team competition atmosphere. Moreover, the event was conducted with much international flair as cheers and verbal exchanges were heard in multiple languages, i.e. Spanish, English, and Chinese.
The host team took the first match 3-0, as Nathan won a close third game against Kevin. Team MDTTC again took the next match 3-0, as Raghu defeated Levris. Team Dominican Association fought back and won the third match 3-1. Raymundo, a former top Dominican Republican player, was able to out power Pamela.
In the forth match, team MDTTC unfortunately had to default because Raghu had problems with one of his contact lenses, and the competition did not allow for delays. So the next match continued between Nathan and Raymundo.
As this fifth matches progressed, the cheering and clapping from both teams grew louder. Some of the best points were played in this match. In the end, Nathan prevailed in five games, and MDTTC got its 4th win. The team that wins 5 singles matches first wins.

Team MDTTC became victorious with a 5 - 2 result, following Pamela’s 3-0 win against Levris, and Raghu’s 3-0 win against Raymundo. Despite their losses, Team Dominican Association showed great competitive spirit.
“I was very happy to represent my club to compete in an Elite Club League.” Expressed Nathan. “I really enjoy team play, and I look forward to our next NYTTL matches.”
We would like to express our thanks to NYTTL Director Mauricio Vergara for overseeing the success of this inaugural event. Also, many thanks to Coach Cheng Yinghua, Coach Jack Huang, Coach Larry Hodges and the MDTTC club members for their enduring support. Lastly, thank you Butterfly North America / Martin Kilpatrick for sponsoring NYTTL.
