The United States of America and Brazil Lead the Way in Pan America

Brazil and the United States of America were the two countries to complete the first day of play, Monday September 6, 2010, at the Pan American Cadet Challenge in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil with the brightest smiles on their faces.
Both countries have players through to the semi-final stages of the Cadet Boys’ Singles and Cadet Girls’ Singles events.
Hugo Calderano and Caroline Kumahara kept the flag flying for Brazil, while for the United States of America it was Charles Deng and Ariel Hsing who reserved penultimate round places. All four players impressed on a day of intense activity.

’Singles event, Hugo Calderano beat Canada’s Mathieu Theriault and Puerto Rico’s Ricardo Jimenez in the group stage before overcoming the latter’s colleague, Brian Afanador in the penultimate round.
At the semi-final stage, he meets Charles Deng who was in equally fine form; seeded no.4, the all action left hander overcame Peru’s Julio Li, Ecuador’s Marlon Vite and Uruguay’s Alen Polakof to book his place in the quarter-finals where he ended the progress of El Salvador’s Julio Calderon.

’s Ricardo Jimenez in four straight games before inflicting a six games defeat on Fermin Tenti, the no.2 seed.
He confronts Paraguay’s Sebastian Aguirre, the no.3 seed, in the semi-finals; he overcame Anand Engineer of the United States and Argentina’s Ezequiel Doncel in the group stage before posting a six games quarter-final victory over Chile’s Sebastian Roman.
Unstoppable
’Singles event, Ariel Hsing and Caroline Kumahara, the respective top two seeds, were unstoppable.
Ariel Hsing recorded first stage wins over Colombia’s Daniela Castillo and Uruguay’s Maria Lorenzotti before defeating Peru’s Valentina Lertora in the semi-finals.
In Form
’s Daniely Rios and Chile’s Natalia Beovides in the first phase of proceedings before succeeding against the Dominican Republic’s Eva Brito in the round of the last eight.
In the semi-finals Ariel Hsing meets Venezuela’s Gremlis Arvelo with Caroline Kumahara confronting Canada’s Anqi Luo.
Caused Upsets
In the group stage, Anqi Luo ousted third seed, Peru’s Valentina Lertora; whilst Gremlis Arvelo defeated the Dominican Republic’s Eva Brito.
Early success for both players and that success followed; at the quarter-final stage Gremlis Arvelo accounted for Chile’s Natalia Beovides with Anqi Luo defeating Uruguay’s Mari-Pia Lorenzotti.
Delayed Flight
It was for Gremlis Arvelo a most notable achievement; her connecting flight from Lima to Guayaquil on Sunday evening had been cancelled, the schedule for Monday was rearranged thanks to the co-operation of all delegates concerned, she arrived two hours before due to play and responded in style.
