The table tennis events in the Central American and Caribbean Games came to a successful conclusion on Friday July 30, 2010, with Mexico’s Marcos Madrid standing on the top step of the medal podium, having given an outstanding performance in the Men’s Singles final.

Satisfaction was written over his face, he had every right to feel more than satisfied; he had played arguably the match of his life to beat Lin Ju in the final.

Marcos Madrid was satisfied as were all those involved in the organization of a splendid competition.

Delighted Chancellor
Everybody had striven heart and soul to achieve the goal of success and one person in particular was thoroughly delighted.

Professor Agnes Mojica, the Chancellor of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, was full of pride and moreover, a convert to the wonderful sport of table tennis.

I suspect a review of the curriculum is imminent!

English Connection
“I studied in Puerto Rico before doing my masters degree in London, I got married to an Englishman from Wales”, said Agnes Mojica.

Oh dear, now if you want to annoy a Welshman call him an Englishman! Wales and England are separate countries both part of Great Britain and I live in Shrewsbury on the border.

“Yes, I know Shrewsbury, I’m going to England next week”, added Agnes Mojica. “I’m looking forward to the trip.”

A word of warning; it’s summer in England but never as hot as July in Puerto Rico!

University Paradise of Puerto Rico
The charming Agnes Mojica has been the Chancellor at the American University of Puerto Rico for almost 20 years; she started in 1991 at the University which was founded in 1912 and is often known as the University Paradise of Puerto Rico.

“I was staggered when I came into the gymnasium a few days before the competition started”, said Agnes Mojica. “I could not believe it was my gymnasium!”

There had been a total transformation; red synthetic floor, blue Stag courts surrounds, Stag table tennis tables, electronic scoring devices, totally professional.

Safe Hands
Well done Puerto Rico, the ITTF Challenge and ITTF Junior Circuit Finals to be held in January 2012 in the island’s capital city of San Juan are in safe hands.

“I was amazed and the standard of play was fantastic, the players were really committed, positive, passionate and everything was of a good quality”, continued a delighted Chancellor. “In this part of the island, table tennis is not that strong but I’m sure many people are now inspired to start, many young children came to watch; I’m sure we have some new table tennis players and our Athlete Director has already received an application to study here from a table tennis player!”

Inter Collegiate Champions
In Puerto Rico, the area of San German may not be the hub of table tennis but the Inter American University has enjoyed success in the sport.

“We were Inter-Collegiate Champions for four years in a row in the 1990s”, concluded Agnes Mojica. “We had a girl, Glendys Reyes at the University, she beat everybody.”

Splendid Host
Success in the 1990s for the Inter American University and success in 2010; they proved superb hosts for the table tennis events at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

The Inter American University, the Puerto Rican Table Tennis Federation and all concerned, take a bow; the goal of raising standards and delivering a top class competition was achieved and achieved in style.

Top marks!
