Bronze medalist at the Volkswagen World Junior Championships in Bahrain in November 2011, 18 year old Maharu Yoshimura won the Men’s Singles title at the Japanese National Championships in Tokyo on Saturday January 21, 2012.

Sponsored by Butterfly and using Tenergy 05 on the forehand and Tenergy 64 on the backhand, Maharu Yoshimura ended the five year reign of Jun Mizutani as his country’s national champion.

Maharu YoshimuraIn a quite sensational final Maharu Yoshimura posted a dramatic seven games (11-9, 11-6, 6-11, 6-11, 11-9, 5-11, 12-10) to clinch the title.

“It’s a final I’ll never forget”, reflected Jun Mizutani; it’s also a final Maharu Yoshimura will always remember!

Throughout 2011, on the ITTF Junior Circuit, Maharu Yoshimura impressed, he won the Boys’ Singles title in both France and Korea; however, even though he succeeded in those two prodigious events, winning the Men’s Singles crown at the Japanese National Championships has exceeded expectations.

Maharu Yoshimura and Jun Mizutani have similarities, both are attacking players, both are mentally strong, both are supported by Butterfly but that is where the likeness ends.

Maharu YoshimuraThe immediate difference is that Maharu Yoshimura is right handed and opposed Jun Mizutani who is left handed but there is far more; Jun Mizutani is the topspin player, outstanding control over a table tennis ball and most content just a short distance away from the table, executing heavy topspin strokes. He is the rally player.

Unquestionably Maharu Yoshimura has a good feeling for a table tennis ball but he is more powerful than Jun Mizutani, more aggressive; perhaps more in the guise of Kiyonobu Iwasaki who was so devastating when playing defenders. He is the destroyer.

However, the most striking factor about Maharu Yoshimura is his graduation from promising junior to now a senior player of stature; many do make the transformation, victory in Tokyo underlined the fact that Maharu Yoshimura has bridged the gap.

At the Japanese National Championships Maharu Yoshimura graduated and graduated with honors.
